An underground utility cable installed in San Marino (near Pasadena) in the 1920s was overloaded causing brownouts. The choices were either spend $2.4 million dollars and cause two years of traffic delays digging up the streets and replacing the underground cable or install a small decentralized photovoltaic power plant for voltage support and load reduction at the end of the overloaded cable. Southern California Edison (SCE) opted for clean, quiet photovoltaic panels that would not cause more air pollution to this already smoggy region. SCE and Solec International hired Solar Electrical Systems to design and install this 98.6 kW solar power system on a reservoir roof at the world-famous Huntington Gardens. The $1 million solar power system was installed in just three months before the 1994 summer peak demand period and has provided clean renewable electrical power for the local community ever since. |
